Global warming is a climate change phenomenon triggered by an increase in greenhouse gases, and its impact on biodiversity throughout the world is very significant. The increase in earth temperature not only affects the weather, but also the population of flora and fauna. One of the most obvious impacts is habitat change. Species that were previously able to adapt to certain climates are now forced to look for new places to survive. Extreme and unpredictable changes in temperature cause many species to lose their natural habitat. For example, warming ocean temperatures can erode coral reefs, which are important ecosystems for many species. With the loss of coral reefs, many fish and marine animals are experiencing population declines, which has direct implications for the food chain. This shows how one small change in the environment can have a huge domino effect on biodiversity. Apart from that, global warming also accelerates the extinction process. According to the IPCC report, several species in tropical ecosystems could experience extinction as temperatures increase beyond 2 degrees Celsius. On land, mammal and bird species in cold regions, such as the Arctic, are forced to adapt to warmer temperatures or face the possibility of extinction. The reproductive cycle is also disrupted due to global warming. Some animal species depend on changes in temperature to trigger mating. Drastic changes in temperature can cause a timing mismatch between an animal’s mating season and food availability, potentially reducing the survival rate of their young. Not only direct impacts, global warming also triggers the emergence of invasive species. With a changing climate, previously isolated species may spread to new areas and compete with local species, even threatening their survival. An example is seen in the Amazon rainforest, where the invasion of alien species poses a challenge to local biodiversity. Changes in weather patterns also influence the spread of disease among animals. For example, some diseases that were previously limited to certain geographic zones are now starting to spread due to climate change. This disease not only endangers animal populations but can also impact human health through zoonoses. Biodiversity is highly dependent on climate and environmental stability. As the climate changes, genetic diversity, species and ecosystems are also threatened. A decline in biodiversity can reduce the resilience of ecosystems to environmental change, making them more vulnerable to disturbances, such as natural disasters. Given the ongoing impacts of global warming, it is important for us to take proactive action. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting natural habitats, and sustainable management of natural resources can help slow the rate of global warming and, in turn, protect biodiversity which is very valuable for the balance of the global ecosystem.
